Managing Partner, Director of Insight and Strategy
Alex is the Managing Partner and Director of Insight and Strategy at ZPB, and has responsibility in leading our data projects, growing the business and managing the accounts of some of our key clients. Alex leads the work of the ZPB Analytics Unit.
Alex joined from Dr Foster where he was head of strategic insight. He has edited six editions of the Hospital Guide (two with Zoe Bedford) and produced two instalments of the influential Intelligent Board series. He was also a key part of the teams that conceived and launched NHS Choices and Dr Foster’s pioneering Global Comparators programme.
After beginning his career in the NHS, Alex spent six years in regulation latterly at the Healthcare Commission leading on elements of the annual health check including risk-based inspection targeting and presentation of information.
In 2006/07 Alex was an inaugural winner of the James Mayes award and spent time working for leading US healthcare company Premier Inc. on emerging models of accountable care.
A strong advocate of the publication of information to improve healthcare performance, Alex gave evidence to the public inquiry into Mid Staffordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Alex is a member of the National Information Board, NHS England’s “empower the person” Board, the DH Transparency Programme Board and the Waltham Forest CCG Patient Participation Board.
In 2018 Alex was appointed as an advisor to the Independent Inquiry into the issues raised by Paterson.
