Why Boston’s Hospitals Were Ready

As a team with a strong background in the hospital sector, we at ZPB were fascinated to see a local surgeon’s perspective on the Boston marathon bombings.

Atul Gawande, a practising surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, describes how eight city hospitals preparedness led to the survival of the explosions’ victims.

From being able to operate just 17 minutes after Hospital arrival (35 minutes exactly after the explosions took place), to having double the amount of staff available, to knowing that clinicians, nurses and managers all instinctively triaged and readied rooms. The hospitals’ organisation meant that every one of the 150+ wounded alive would survive.
