The challenge
Harley Street Health District is the UK’s most important centre for healthcare. Yet its contribution to the economy, patient care, innovation, research and medicine had never been quantified. The challenge was to substantiate and create a narrative that describes a whole health ecosystem by defining its value. This creates a story about the collective of the new District and its potential to grow and contribute into the future.
ZPB works for the Howard de Walden Estate to build the Harley Street Health District brand globally, and tell the story of the cutting-edge medicine, specialist care and long history of innovation found across the District.

Our approach
To develop the District’s first impact report, we identified the data and stories that could demonstrate its contribution. Our initial research and analysis focused on activity among the district’s 29 largest providers. We drew on private healthcare data from PHIN and the Howard de Walden Estate, alongside reports from LaingBuisson and data from the Office for National Statistics.
The analysis gave us several strong headlines:
-
The District's private healthcare activity is estimated to be worth £1.85 billion.
-
The District’s private spells (continuous periods of care as an inpatient or day-case patient) have increased by 10% compared with the previous year, representing approximately £143 million in growth over 12 months.
-
The District has contributed an estimated £810 million in value to the UK economy in the last year (estimated GDP contribution).
-
This is predicted to reach £911m in the next year.
-
There has been a 25% increase in private chemotherapy in the District in the last year.

Launch activity included stakeholder events, media outreach that secured coverage in The Times and other publications, and social media communications. More than 1,000 people read the report, and the website recorded its highest traffic to date on launch day. A paid LinkedIn campaign brought the report to a much larger audience
